What to do in Marbella

What to do in Marbella

We have now been non-resident apartment owners for 3 years in Marbella. We have two kids and constantly try to find new events in Marballa and the local area that we can explore and recommend our guests to get the most out of their vacation stay.

Please add and recommend events that we are still lacking to explore.

Car rental in Marbella

Car rental Posted on 13 Oct, 2017 22:41:47

It doesn’t make sense to rent a car in Marbella. So book it with pickup/return in Malaga airport.
But it is a jungle with regards to prices. What is the final/total price?
On top of the usual rental price be aware of the following add-ons:
– Full insurance coverage (usually the most expensive add-on) if you want to avoid 1000euro risk/EXCESS
– Extra for full to full tank or paying primium for an empty tank
– Out-of-hours (typically if you arrive later than 23.00) could be 40-80 euros extra
– Service fee (some have it some don’t) 30 to 30 euros
REMEMBER TO TAKE PICTURES OF THE CAR when you pick it up as documentation for scratches before/after. Best if the agency sign for the scratches that are already there.

There are two systems in the airport:
1. Car rental companies in Malaga airport at Level -1 in the basement
2. Car rental outside the airport with free bus pickup

1. Car rental companies in Malaga airport
If it is first time in Malaga airport most people prefer the concept of just getting the car from the airport. Sounds and feels faster and safer. But usually it is about the same time from pickup your luggage until you are driving away from the airport. It always is approx 1 hour out of high season and weekend peak. Car rental companies in the airport offer tend to have a long waiting line unless you have paid extra for priority.
These companies are (with links for their sites):
AVIS
Enterprise
Europcar
Goldcar
Hertz
RecordGo
Sixt

Our experience is that RecordGo is the cheapest option.

2. Car rental companies outside the airport with pickup busses
Once you have picked up your luggage you go to the exit. All car rental companies have a representative just outside standing with branded signs. A few of them ask you to call when you are landed. They arrange a bus within 5 min just 3 min extra walk outside at a joint pickup place. The bus will take you to the car rental where you sign in and pay. The total time is about the same as above – but maybe feels longer.
Their prices are sometimes more competitive.
These companies are (with links for their sites):
Delpaso
MalagaCar
Marbesol
HelleHollis
AurigaCrown
Autolink
Cargest
Centauro
FirstCarGroup
GlobalCarHire
NizaCars
PepeCar
TonysCarRental
TopCars
YellowCar

We recommend Delpaso and MalagaCar.

There are most likely more….

Marbella New Year and fireworks

Free activities in Marbella Posted on 09 Oct, 2017 21:58:40

Coming from Denmark where fireworks is a big event at New Years 24.00 entering the new year. Then Marbella is disappointing. You will only find a limted hotel fireworks at 5 star hotels and maybe not the best evening for the kids. But but after several years of search we found the perfect place. It is 40 min drive from Marbella but worth the drive. There is even a townhall watch and a funny “foam spray” event which the kids found pretty cool.
And the place is….

Aventura Amazonia Elviria

Malaga harbour

Free activities in Marbella Posted on 08 Oct, 2017 18:35:07

This is a nice long walk on the wide promenade. Usually also some nice ships, shops and restaurants. Here is also the Malaga version of London eye or try a segway. These are of course not free but nice add-on if the kids get too impatient,

ORIENT PALACE TEPPANYAKI

Marbella Restaurants Posted on 08 Oct, 2017 18:26:13

ELVIRIA is a town 10 min by car in direction of Malaga. They have many good restaurants right next to each other just when you exit from A7.

This is our girls favourite restaurant. Asia food: Japanese, Thai etc. They have the most amazing Teppanyaki show and selfie pancake with icecream is their specialty (watch the video). Make sure you book in advance in high season.

Address: Centro Comercial Pinogolf, Local 32, 29604 Marbella, Málaga, Spanien

Opening hours: 12-24

Malaga airport museum

Free activities in Marbella Posted on 08 Oct, 2017 18:14:16

Well, it is actually not in Marbella but right next to Malaga airport. Actually it is the old airport that has been turned into a museum. It is free entrance but they appreciate donations. Many different aircraft and it is not just a “don’t touch” museum. As you can see from the pictures you get a chance to be pilot 🙂
Entusiasts are happy to tell stories and details of the different aircraft. Surprisingly not many tourists. But it is really worth a visit.

Jaén castle

Long distance trips Posted on 08 Oct, 2017 18:09:09

If you drive via Marbella-Madrid this is really the perfect stop (and especially if you need to charge your Tesla). Amazing viewpoint (see the panorama video)at the top of the mountain. The hotel is in the Castle and it really like turning back time 300 years.

Marbella to Barcelona

Long distance trips Posted on 08 Oct, 2017 17:57:35

Barcelona is a long ride. But if you go by car to Marbella then Barcelona will be a natural stop.

Here are the things we decided to do in Barcelona:
– FC Barcelona Stadium. Don’t need to be a big fan to be impressed
– Gaudi home and park. Nice walk and beautiful buildings
– Barcelona Pride parade
– Rambla walk
– Bus roundtrip

La Farola

Marbella Restaurants Posted on 06 Oct, 2017 18:35:19

It is actually not in Marbella – but in Fuengirola. But it is really good on all parameters. Food is good and you get BIG meals. Service is extraordinary and the atmosphere is unbeatable if you sit outside.

You need to reserve a table in advance to be sure to get one. Dominated by Scandinavian guests.

Their website is not good and doesn’t reflect this great place:
http://www.restaurantelafarola.es/

May not be that easy to find or to find parking space.

Opening hours: 19-23

Phone: +34 952 46 14 64

Zoo de Castellar

Kids activities in Marballa Posted on 05 Oct, 2017 21:12:24

This is no.1 priority for the kids. I have never been to a zoo where you get this close and interactive with the animals. They once had a white baby tiger which you could stroke. Last time a baby panther.
Not a commercial place like Selwo parks.

About 1 hour from Marbella – but worth the ride.

Expect to spend 3-4 hours there.

Opening hours: 10-20

Butterfly park Benalmadena

Kids activities in Marballa Posted on 05 Oct, 2017 20:59:20

The park is very small. But it is very interesting – for both kids and adults. But expect to spend 1-2 hours max.
I was so lucky that one of the big butterflies landed on my nose.
It is not cheap taking the size of the park into consideration. But perfect on a rainy day.

Crocodile park

Kids activities in Marballa Posted on 05 Oct, 2017 20:54:26

The kids like it. But I like it even more! Good entertainment for all ages. The kids can even have photo holding a crocodile baby. It is not a big park. Expect to use max 2 hours there. It is right next to the water park. So could be combined.

Opening hours: 11-17

Marbella Lighthouse beach

Free activities in Marbella Posted on 05 Oct, 2017 20:47:47

We have our favourite. The beach next to Marbella Lighthouse. Protected against big wave and a really nice and sandy beach. Right next to Marbella promenade and all the restaurants if you need an ice cream or a pizza lunch.

Bullfighting

Marbella entertainment Posted on 05 Oct, 2017 20:40:36

Some like it. Some don’t. It is a part of the culture. But don’t bring your kids.
There is a bullring close to center of Marbella city and close to the big shopping center La Canada. Every summer season on Sundays there is a bullfighting in the city. You notice posters all over Marbella promoting the event – Plaza del toros

  • The Marbella Bullring holds 9,500 spectators. It has eight access gates, but the parking area is quite small. Far from the historic district, it can be accessed from road N-340.
  • In the summer, there are ‘novilladas’ on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. Tickets can be bought at the box office or the stand on Paseo de la Alameda (average price: €30).
  • In the first half of June, Marbella celebrates its major fiesta: St Bernabé’s Festival. The festival’s highlight is on 11 June, when they commemorate the Reconquista of the city. From noon to 7:00 p.m., the town’s streets get filled with people dancing and enjoying themselves. During the festival, there are bullfights every day at 7:00 p.m.
  • Can be accessed from Autovía del Mediterráneo (A-7; former N-340) or Autopista de la Costa del Sol (AP-7). Once there, drive along Avenida del Duque de Lerma and then Avenida de la Reina Victoria, leading to the bullring (Google: http://bit.ly/HG0thd)

Puerto Banus walk and shopping

Free activities in Marbella Posted on 05 Oct, 2017 20:06:02

This is 10 min. drive from Marbella. Concentration of Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Bugatti is huge. You will also find all the high-end shops in this street. But the ferries or yacht sizes you will find here is the most amazing. Great night life with many bars. Also good for an evening walk combined with dinner. Not as expensive as you would expect.

Marbella Old Town

Free activities in Marbella Posted on 05 Oct, 2017 19:59:39

This is the best of Marbella and a must if you combine it with a walk and dinner at the Orange Square. Many good restaurants. Many orange trees in the streets. Nothing better than the smell of the orange tree flowers.

Sierra Navada

Free activities in Marbella Posted on 05 Oct, 2017 16:48:11

Wanna try skiing in south of Spain? Except for summer season this is actually possible. It is a two hour drive from Marbella. First you hit Malaga, then Granada and the very top: Sierra Navada. Lots of signs on the way and a beutiful drive through the mountains. Usually not a one day trip. It should be combined with Granada. Most fantastic and beautiful city just taking a walk in the city. Normally combined with Alhambra castle. That alone is ½ to full day visit.

A mountain walk to Ojén

Free activities in Marbella Posted on 03 Oct, 2017 23:40:58
  • A good nature experience, 1½-2 hours walk (7.1 km) in the mountains from the resort to the small town Ojén. Lots of sights on the way to Ojén.

  • Fantastic mountain views and as you get close to the town a small waterfall, beautiful flowers and orange trees.
  • Ojén has plenty of restaurants and sights such as the old church museum and just a walk in the city centre.
  • This is also perfect for an ATV drive – with many other potential routes.

Kids horse riding in Marbella

Kids activities in Marballa Posted on 03 Oct, 2017 23:02:05

My girls love horse riding. They are 11 and 7 year old. Every time we are in Marbella we need to go for a horse riding lesson. It is now a tradition. We found a very good teacher (Francisco). A young guy who speaks very little English but has a great understanding of what my girls like and how experienced they are. First lesson was in a closed arena. Second time we went for riding in the mountains. Price is 30 euros/hour. They have English speaking teachers as well.
They also have a restaurant. But that should not be the reason for the visit 🙂

Name of place: Hacienda Montemaria
Less than 10 min from Marbella center. Exit to Altos de Marbella / Marbella Hospital
Call in advance for booking: 616 60 96 20. Normally best after 17.00
